FACULTY EVALUATION

Since IBA’s faculty evaluation is pretty much biased and takes a hell long time to finish, this is a shorter more direct evaluation.

This evaluation will highlight what is right with the teacher, what is wrong with the teacher, what should they change about themselves, how can they make their teaching styles better, what should they keep in the course. you can list their habits, they quirks and the perks. you can tell which teacher to approach with what problem and who will help you the most. you been studying for more than twelve years now, on average you have been taught by more than seventy five teachers. that is a lot of experience. you are the front line, you face the teacher for three hours each week for the whole semester, you give their midterms, you give their final, you give their projects, you submit reports. you know their birthdays (yes, there are teachers whose birthdays are worth remembering), you know their families (yes ). you love them and you hate them and you learn from them and you teach them.

For teachers who have taught us. a more direct evaluation. lets tell them what we truly feel about them.

you can nominate which teachers profiles to put up and you can start commenting on their pages.

    I see some good responses under individual faculty.

    I would volunteer for being the next bakra – the current review system in place is pretty good, but lacks honest comments. I tried to invite audience on my own blog, but you definitely have much bigger and vocal audience

    sir, i think we should evaluate the faculty evaluation system itself….in my personal view, the faculty eval. system is just a piece of shit, of which nobody cares about…sorry to say, neither the students, admin, nor the faculty itself…I doubt they get to know their evaluation…IBA seems to conduct inorder to impress the students or maybe due to some HEC requirement….kher i am interested what other guyz think abt it…

  10. farzal Says:

    the faculty eval system actually is really good. Its better than what I saw at UT austin or NYU. Its a lot more detailed, even though, some of the questions are quite stupid.

    I’ve always been able to get detailed feedback when Ive asked for it from Sayeed Ghani. He has also guided me to help improve in weak areas.

    Its just that most faculty probably never bothers to get their feedback from relevant departments?

  11. criticiba Says:

    shouldnt the university be sending out the faculty eval reports to the teachers. the evaluation system can be a better if the scale is moved towards a lesser biased version . secondly the students, a lot of them dont really fill it by looking at the questions. its too detailed to actually have the students fill it in dilegently. i think it has around 50 (correct me if i am wrong) questions and well on average you have six teachers so its gets very long and boring to fill. plus if the cms screws up in the middle you lose the whole page.

  12. farzal Says:

    aah, technology is the culprit once again. iba should stop developing their own systems and use free services such as ZOHO creator or google host of applications?

  13. =) Says:

    i agree. if the faculty eval was like shorter students would actually do it honestly. but its too long and half the questions are retarded and u hv so many to do that its just seems like a meaningless exercise that half of us just fill on the deadline simply coz we cant gv de mids widout dem. so well ya.. if it had lesser questions we would like ACTUALLY read and do it properly..

  14. farzal Says:

    one who cares should be ok with spending 20 minutes to give genuine feedback to a faculty who teaches you for 2100 minutes in a semester.

    Is 1% asking for too much?

  15. criticiba Says:

    here are the questions on the faculty evaluation form

    1 Discusses point of view other than his/her own
    2 Contrasts implications of various theories
    3 Discusses recent developments in the field
    4 Presents origins of ideas and concepts
    5 Gives references for more interesting and involved points
    6 Presents facts and concepts and related fields
    7 Emphasizes conceptual understanding
    8 Explains clearly
    9 Is well prepared
    10 Gives lectures that are easy to take notes in
    11 Is careful and precise in answering questions
    12 Summarizes major points
    13 States objectives for each class session
    14 Identifies what he/she considers important
    15 Encourages class discussion
    16 Invites students to share their knowledge and experiences
    17 Invites criticism of his/her ideas
    18 Has a genuine interest in students
    19 Relates to students as individuals
    20 Is accessible to students out of class
    21 Has an interesting style of presentation
    22 Is enthusiastic about his/her subject
    23 Seems to have self-confidence
    24 Is fair and consistent in grading
    25 Compiles grading in time
    26 Comes to class on time
    27 Maintains discipline in the class
    28 Number of classes rescheduled during the semester (5 for 0 class, 4 for 1 class, 3 for
    2-3 classes, 2 for 4-5 classes, 1 for more than 5 classes)
    29 Course outline was provided (5 if provided in 1st session, 1 if provided in or after 2nd session)
    30 Your inclination to take another course with this instructor (1 is for very low desire and 5 indicates high desire to take courses)

    and here’s the rating scale

    Numerical weight age for rating types
    1 = Poor
    2 = Adequate
    3 = Good
    4 = Excellent
    5 = Outstanding

  16. farzal Says:

    some of the questions seem childish. For example, “Identifies what he/she considers important” seems to be saying is faculty identifying what’s coming in the finals?

    but overall, the process is there. students can give their 20 minutes to submitting this, and IBA can automate delivery of compiled results to faculty, that would help.

    one more thing – future teaching assignments should consider the ratings too. from the sound of it, some faculty is just wasting students time and money. I dont see how they can get average above 2.0?

  17. Junaid Afghani Says:

    Problem with the faculty evaluation questionnaire:

    The rating scale is biased: It has 1 negative (Poor) and 4 positives (Adequate – Good – Excellent – Outstanding). So even if a teacher has an average rating of 2 (which is among the lowest on a scale of 5) he is teaching ‘adequately’.

    Solution (a) = balance 2 positives, 2 negatives & 1 neutral:
    poor – unsatisfactory – average – good – excellent

    [OR]

    Solution (b) = Rate 5 for ‘Strongly agree’ and 1 for ‘Strongly disagree’

    Problem with the feedback:

    If IBA is to retain or regain its no.1 position as Pakistan’s top business school the voice of its students (IBA’s main product) must be heard. There is a widespread feeling among students that faculty evaluation is a waste of time because nothing happens to the teachers no matter how they are evaluated by the students. If a teacher behaves rudely in the class, if he gives biased marks, or if he is completely ignorant of the subject, or doesn’t know how to communicate his knowledge, we still find him/her in IBA in the next semester teaching in exactly the same way.

    Yes, there’s nothing wrong in expecting a student to honestly fill in their teacher evaluation but the motivation will come only when the administration shows that tough steps have been taken in improving the teachers and the teaching standards in IBA.

    Solution (a): Just like students with CGPA below 2.2 are warned and those below 2.0 are expelled, same should go for teachers with their cumulative evaluations. Why maintain double standards? Let’s standardize the aptitude & attitude of teachers as well; after all they are the processes that create the final product.

    [AND]

    Solution (b): Just like top students get recognition awards – we should have ‘Best teacher of the Year’ awards based on cumulative faculty evaluation. Good teachers deserve our greatest respect and recognition, and should set a standard for the rest of the teachers to follow
