Happy Independence Day

August 13, 2008

We turn 61 this independence day and all we have learned is to multiply and divide ourselves. with the inflation hitting 24% in July the Country’s ruler intend to impeach the President. That, and correct me if i am wrong, which has not happened in over 100 years. We are closing down schools. leaving students without schools. we are facing a shortage of textbooks. traffic on roads is getting worse day by day. Some are importing exotic animals in their homes. Some are fasting even before Ramazan.  We treat our nuclear scientists, neurologists and students with utmost disregard.

What did you do this independence day to help your country?

What will you do tomorrow for your country?

NCHD closure – 400,000 students school-less

August 13, 2008

this is wat a friend’s mail was

*quote*

hey,
just an article i read in dawn the other day, tucked away in a corner and not mentioned again, because of course, there are things much more important than education in our country. thought i`d share it with a bunch of you guys. i`m hoping it will cause some amount of discomfort.
400,000 children may end up without schools with NCHD’s closure

By A Reporter
ISLAMABAD, Aug 6: About 400,000 children enrolled in feeder schools, opened by National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), may find their institutions closed down in case the commission is wound up, it has been learnt.

Besides, 550,000 people dependent on the commission would also suffer in the wake of its closure. As many as 80,000 employees of the NCHD have already been shown the door.

The commission has been facing financial hardships since November of last year after the federal government provided it Rs1 billion against the allocated Rs2.3 billion for the fiscal year 2007-08, a source in the commission told Dawn here on Wednesday.

The remaining amount of Rs1.3 billion was due in January 2008 to cater to the needs of the remaining part of the fiscal year ending in June. But this amount was also not provided and instead the NCHD was asked to reduce its budget requirement. However, against a reduced requirement of Rs874 million, a grant of Rs472 million was provided to clear off the liabilities until June 2008, the source said, adding that the NCHD, after clearing off all its liabilities, would be left with only Rs4 million by the end of August. Under such circumstances the NCHD operations would come to a complete halt.

To review the critical state of NCHD funds, especially in the wake of no firm commitment by the government, a meeting of the members of the National Commission for Human Development was held on July 28 which was presided over by its chairman, Dr Nasim Ashraf.

After detailed deliberations, it was unanimously decided that while the government would be approached yet again for provision of required funds, the NCHD must remain legally and financially solvent to avoid future complications in case the funds are not made available.

The commission, therefore, issued termination of service notices to all employees with effect from August 1, she said.

The meeting also considered the issue of security and preservation of NCHD assets the cost of which comes to Rs543 million in 122 locations throughout the country.

It was observed with concern that if the funds were not provided to the NCHD after September 1, the organisation will not be in a position to retain the rental accommodation and services of the necessary staff to take care of its assets, she added.

The decision of closing down the programme all of a sudden and freezing the allocations had caused resentment among the employees, she noted.

Established in 2002 as a fast track initiative to improve social sector outcomes at the grass-root level in 16 districts, the NCHD was fighting fit in the domains of social sectors in 122 districts across the country, she said.

It was after assessing the NCHD performance in 16 districts in 2005 that the president and prime minister directed the commission to extend its operations to all 122 districts for which a grant of Rs14 billion for a period of five years was approved. After the approval the commission established its provincial offices and 98 human development support units in various districts and employed about 88,000 personnel throughout the country including Fata, Fana and Azad Kashmir, she added.

The source further said since its establishment, the NCHD, under its Universal Primary Education Programme, opened 21,639 community-based feeder schools and enrolled 8.235 million children in the age group of five and seven in 117 districts.

please write to any and all newspapers and post your anger/indignation/mild annoyance on websites and let other people know as well.
i don`t think its very fair that the closing down of one of the few organisations that are working for human development in Pakistan should be taken this lightly. and i know its easy for the article to take a backseat in our minds as well so i`m hoping you`ll write to some newspaper or post it on some blog online within the next hour =p
i`m not going to rave about our literacy rates and the indifference of our tragically comic politicians because we see that every time we switch the t.v. on or flip the newspapers open.
please write, even if you don`t believe its going to lead to anything. the least we can do is try to try.
thanks for reading the email anyways =p

The no-event week & impeachment perogative

April 17, 2008

Shahid Mir has declared the next week as a no-event week in spirit of total boredom and lack of concern for his duties as a student counselor. I believe the student counselor should be helping students which he doesnt ever appear to do. the

  • Coming to campus for two days only and that too to teach one class.
  • having a do-it-next-monday attitude.
  • Making students wait for no reason outside his office for the approval
  • Biggest reason for not giving approval, his mood
  • Never has he done any sort of counseling in terms of higher education or job-fit
  • Is more towards  policing the students, (interogating BBA 2 section 2 exec over a missing projector for days and days, making them stand till more than five a day before exams)
  • for putting undue and unjust fines on students
  • not picking up anyone’s phone

i think given his core job description, which is not fulfilling, a motion to impeach him from the position of student counselor should be passed. all those in favor, say “aye”.

Another motion to define the job responsibilities to define the role of a student counselor shud be passed. the responsibilities shud be.

  1. availability to students atleast five days a week
  2. an hour for each student club should be alloted every week.
  3. should advise students on academics, sports, event management and other areas of personal development
  4. A lets-make-events-happen attitude rather than a no-event-for-next-week attitude

any more suggestions people

Basant Bake Sale

March 11, 2008

11th of March saw a beautiful day at the Main Campus. With the colorful, traditional dress code and the yummy food collected by CWS for the bake sale, the day was scheduled to be the annual spring celebration. The cafeteria was done in bright in colors with kites, balloons and streamers.

I have to hand it to the decoration committee – they did a great job. The chunri hung over the door and the kites spelling out “Basant Bake Sale” gave the whole cafeteria a very basant atmosphere. The girls were dressed in reds, yellows and greens and the guys in kameez shalwar. Since early morning, there was an excited air with all the CWS people running around to get things ready for break time.

Around twelve o’clock, things really took a turn as the weather decided to join the celebration. Wind blew in our faces and in an hour or so, the sound of thunder accompanied the sound of the loud bhangra music. There was plenty of food for everyone which does not in any way signify a lack of interest but merely that the CWS had prepared well.

The haleem was absolutely mouth-watering, the chaat even better. At break, the gola ganda guy popped up and was the hit of the day. However, this writer found the most scrumptious item on the CWS menu to be the ice-cream with the yummy cake. The writer is least concerned with the name of this dessert but what the writer does know is that the cake absolutely melted in the writer’s mouth and the icecream was the cherry on top of this heavenly combination of vanilla, chocolate cake, marie biscuit and almonds.

It was a delightful morning and the rain did nothing to dampen the students’ moods. If anything, it added to the festive atmosphere and made the whole morning more enjoyable. The bake sale was a success and I just hope that the CWS collected the funds it needed.
