BITS NEW COUNCIL

February 27, 2008

well, the voting took place today, without any prior notice. and the votes were casted.

The candidates were Rizwan Asghar and Ahmed bin Amjad for the Vice President post and Junaid Afghani and Satti from Hostel for the treasurer post.

The winners were Ahmed bin Amjad and Junaid Afghani.

Ahmed won by a margin of 27 votes , Rizwan’s Class BBA MIS 8 was not in full strength so he apparently lost 18 votes since the class was not informed of the voting beforehand. but even then it would have been a close call. Junaid won 189 to 75.

Congratulations to the new council. You have a big task ahead of you and very little time to prove yourself. Godspeed.

Renovation, Water Tank and Classes- Update

February 20, 2008

Well, they disturbed the classes ultimately.  They really should have delayed the renovation till summers, but guess thats when they would be in audit.

Anyways, saw the class being taken place in the prayers area, and the prayers area being shifted to the lawn in the middle. The prayers area’s name is the “Water Tank”. Seemed pretty weird that they would have to go through so much hassle in middle of the semester, disrupting classes and causing all sort of confusing.

The Research portal, Room 7 and UGL are the only functional class room in the executive block. Above the administrative wing, Lab 16 and the whole of CCS block is now flooded with students.

The executive side is off for Fridays and Saturdays and their normal classes have been stretched to 75 min to accommodate this.

BITS ELECTION

February 20, 2008

Guess the election worm has bitten IBA too, although i wonder under which constitution these upcoming elections for BITS are being held to determine the VP. To remind you guys, the VP had resigned from his post as reported here and well i think it has almost been four months now, but news on campus is that next week elections for the post of VP will be held, though no notices are up. I assume there will be no campaigning either. it is a good sign that alteast something is happening, lets hope its for the best.

Democracy. or as the citibank’s country manager, Aftab Ahmed said “Meritocracy”

VOTE OR CHOSE NOT TO

February 20, 2008

we constitute a major part of the population. a big majority of the portion lies between 18 and 25 and i believe we can make a difference by voting. the old argument of people not worthy enough, then a better way to boycott the elections would be if we had something like 49-O like India does (according to an email i got)

Did you know that there is a system in our(India’s) constitution, as per the 1969 act, in section “49-O” that a person can go to the polling booth, confirm his identity, get his finger marked and convey the presiding election officer that he doesn’t want to vote for anyone!

Yes such a feature is available, but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it. This is called “49-O”.

Why should you go and say “I VOTE NOBODY”… because, in a ward, if a candidate wins, say by 123 votes, and that particular ward has received “49-O” votes more than 123, then that polling will be
cancelled and will have to be re-polled .

Not only that, but the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-polling, since people had already expressed their decision on them .

This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way, of our whole political system… it is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public….

Seems to be a wonderful weapon against corrupt parties in Pakistan… show your power, expressing your desire not to vote for anybody, is even more powerful than voting… so don’t miss your chance. So either vote, or vote not to vote (vote 49-O)

The so called girls-common room / ladies prayer area

February 17, 2008

The cramped room in the hallway above the dean’s office hosts a lot of offices, the lab a washroom and a ladies prayer room. It also serves as the girls common room. its really small. it has a very messy and broken look to it. and during summers it gets pretty hot inside cause theres nothing but one fan inside. No air conditioner.

Given the number of females in IBA, i think it would be wise to cater to their needs.

The thing is when you study in IBA, you basically live here. you dont go home. you eat, sleep, drink, study here.

you spend more time in IBA than you do at your home. The least IBA could do is make life a little better for us.
